Web Hosting Company Reliability Report, Released by Netcraft
Netcraft measures and makes available the response times of fifty leading hosting providers' sites. The performance measurements are made at fifteen minute intervals from separate points around the internet, and averages are calculated over the immediately preceding 24 hour period. Included in the new report are: DataPipe, Navisite, MyHosting.com and iWeb8, followed closely by New York Internet and Webfusion. According to Netcraft, this marks the first time in the top spot of our monthly rankings for NaviSite and My Hosting.com, although each have been among the top 10 a number of times. DataPipe has been the most reliable host fives times previously, while iWeb8 was the top performer in January. NaviSite is a managed hosting company in Andover, Mass., that also provides content distribution services. Navisite is publicly held, and was among the best performing U.S. stocks in the infrastructure sector in 2006, when its shares rose 457 percent. It has 950 customers in 14 data centers in the US, UK and India. MyHosting.com is the hosting arm of SoftCom Technology Consulting, which also operates the mail2web email service. MyHosting.com is based in Toronto, Canada and was founded in 1997. The company specializes in hosting on the Microsoft platform, but added Linux hosting in 2004. From a customers' point of view, the percentage of failed requests is more pertinent than outages on the hosting companies' own sites, as this gives a pointer to reliability of routing, and this is why we choose to rank our table by fewest failed requests, rather than shortest periods of outage. For more information about the measurement process and current measurements, please visit: http://uptime.netcraft.com/perf/reports/Hosters.

Ex-Prosecutors Find Private Practice a Challenge
The Sarbanes-Oxley Act in 2002 created a big demand for attorneys who could handle more corporate governance business, and law firms snatched up federal prosecutors in hopes of taking advantage of the opportunity. But though the transition to Debevoise & Plimpton was "pretty easy" for former Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew Ceresney, not every prosecutor is cut out for private practice, he says. "The government tends to see things as black and white. You definitely see things more in shades of gray."

Sometimes you just want to see what connections your machine is making to the outside world and what ports it’s using. While wireshark and tcpdump are really nice for inspecting detailed package contents. IPTraf is really about connections and interface statistics. Because iptraf is based on ncurses the program can be run from a text-console and still have a (primitive) `gui`.

Intel's Nehalem desktop chips to be called Core i7
The high-end desktop versions of Intel's Nehalem processor family will carry the Core i7 moniker when they are released later this year.
Nehalem, which Intel executives will detail at the upcoming Intel Developer Forum conference in San Francisco, includes multiple processor cores as well as an integrated memory controller hub to improve performance -- a feature that is currently only available on x86 processors from rival Advanced Micro Devices.
The Nehalem chips will be manufactured using Intel's 45-nanometer manufacturing process.
Intel's current processor family is called Core 2, an apparent reference to both the use of multiple cores on these chips and the company's current microarchitecture, which is called Core. The Nehalem family will also use the Core brand, but Intel will drop the numeral two when referring to these chips.
Within the Nehalem family, chips designed for different types of computers will have individual sub-brands, such as the i7 brand that will be attached to the high-end desktop chips, called Core i7, said Ruby Au, a company spokeswoman in Hong Kong.
Other names will be used for Core processors intended for other types of computers, she said.
Nehalem is set to be the principal focus of IDF, much as Centrino Atom was the focus at IDF in Shanghai during April. But senior company executives slated to speak at IDF will also discuss other products, including system-on-chips designed for entertainment devices and an upcoming quad-core mobile processor, Au said.
The quad-core mobile processor was scheduled to be released this month, but Au said the chip is not likely to be released during IDF. "We are just planning to share some additional information about the chip," she said.

Oct. 1, 1957: Thalidomide Cures Morning Sickness, But ...
1957: Thalidomide, a drug developed to help women overcome the symptoms of morning sickness during pregnancy, is first marketed in West Germany. Forty-six countries approve its use before thalidomide's terrible side effects become apparent. Thalidomide is a powerful synthetic tranquilizer, originally developed by Ciba, a Swiss pharmaceutical company. Unable to make it commercially profitable, Ciba gave up on the drug. A German company, Chemie Gruenenthal, took over and eventually began marketing thalidomide as a "completely safe" method for warding off morning sickness. Except thalidomide wasn't "completely safe." In fact, it was quite the opposite. Inadequate testing procedures were to blame for what followed. Had the pharmaceutical labs done a better job of testing thalidomide, they would have discovered that the drug's molecules were able to penetrate the placental wall, especially during the first trimester of pregnancy when the fetus is largely unformed. This invasion of the womb resulted in a variety of profound birth defects, including deformed and missing limbs, deafness, blindness, cleft palate and a slew of internal problems. By the early 1960s, more than 10,000 thalidomide babies had been born. Although many died in infancy (an estimated 40 percent died before their first birthday), quite a few survived into adulthood. Now in their 40s, most thalidomide survivors continue suffering from a variety of chronic health problems directly related to their...
