Magic Circle Firms Have the Magic Touch
New market forces are playing into the hands of top U.K. firms, especially the Magic Circle, which now dominates high-end corporate work in most of Europe's major jurisdictions. In the last financial year, the Magic Circle quintet saw growth in profits per equity partner of above 20 percent, dispelling any stateside views that Brits are soft on underperforming lawyers, blindly wedded to locksteps, and on holiday too often. Magic Circle firms are gaining ground and, in some cases, surpassing U.S. rivals.
Former Attorney General of U.K. Joins Debevoise & Plimpton
The former attorney general of the United Kingdom has joined New York's Debevoise & Plimpton as the firm's London-based head of European litigation. Peter Goldsmith, who served as the chief lawyer for the British crown and government from 2001 until June, said in an interview that the fact that it was an American rather than a British law firm had not been important to him. "The key part for me is that this firm understands problems need to be dealt with on a global basis," said Goldsmith.
Barlow Litigation Team Defects to Mayer Brown
Barlow Lyde & Gilbert has been hit by the departure for Mayer Brown of commercial litigation head Clare Canning and two junior litigation partners. Canning is best-known for leading Barlows' successful defense of Ernst & Young in the four-year Equitable Life litigation. The departures leave five partners focused specifically on commercial litigation.
Small Law Firm Has a Big Appetite for Litigation
Mark Robinson's cases read like the inventory of a medical clinic: Baycol, fen-phen, Rezulin, Vioxx, Propulsid, Bextra, Celebrex and Zyprexa. In almost every case, Robinson, founder of Robinson, Calcagnie & Robinson in Newport Beach, Calif., has served as lead or liaison counsel for plaintiffs lawyers in California. But the 15-lawyer firm isn't all about pharmaceuticals -- Robinson says he would like to begin filing more individual cases in business fraud and patent infringement.
How to Go Native Without Going South
Electronically stored information and native data are not one and the same. In fact, says attorney Craig Ball, litigants should be wary of responding to a discovery request with e-mail in its native formats because it holds confidential material invisible to users but recoverable by your opponent.

Mukasey's AG Nomination Boosts Patterson Belknap
Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler may be a New York institution, but the nomination of Michael Mukasey for U.S. attorney general may well put the law firm on the national map. Mukasey most recently comes from the 174-lawyer firm, which he rejoined as a partner a year ago. One legal recruiter says he expects the firm's heightened profile to matter mostly to law school recruits and new lawyers who care more about a firm's cachet and less about its practice platforms than do partner recruits.
Federal Judge Throws Out Suit Against State Judge Who Banned 'Rape' Language From Trial
A Nebraska federal judge dismissed a lawsuit against a state judge who barred anyone from saying "rape" or "victim" during a criminal trial, ruling Tuesday that the accuser failed to prove that he should intervene. Tory Bowen claims the trial judge violated her free speech rights by barring the words, along with the phrase "sexual assault," from the trial of Pamir Safi, who is charged with first-degree sexual assault.
Buyer of Gauguin Painting Loses Suit Over High Appraisal
Allegations that a prominent Manhattan art dealer appraised a painting by Paul Gauguin at millions of dollars above its value without revealing that the dealer had an "ownership interest" in the piece have been dismissed. Supreme Court Justice Emily Jane Goodman said plaintiff Mandarin Trading failed to prove that Wildenstein & Co. and its president "owed any fiduciary duty or relation of trust and confidence." She also denied Mandarin's request for rescission of the transaction and award of damages.
Supreme Court to Address Pharmaceutical Companies' Protection From State Suits
The Supreme Court said Tuesday it will decide a case that centers on whether federal regulation of pharmaceuticals pre-empts state law. The case involves a product liability lawsuit against Pfizer's Warner-Lambert unit. The justices have already agreed to hear a similar case, , which focuses on whether the federal approval of a medical device shields the device from liability claims under state law.
Judge Declares Mistrial in Phil Spector Murder Case After Jury Reports Deadlock
A mistrial was declared Wednesday in the murder case against music producer Phil Spector when the jury reported for a second time that it could not reach a verdict on whether he killed actress Lana Clarkson more than four years ago. The mistrial came after months of a trial in which jurors had to decide who pulled the trigger of a revolver that went off in Clarkson's mouth about early Feb. 3, 2003.
