How Far Are We Away From Teleportation?

Three years ago, scientists were able to successfully teleport the quantum state of an atom without any physical link. Since first understanding quantum entanglement nearly six years ago, how much closer are we now to human teleportation? It sounds like we're not that much closer. Scientists have been focusing more on transferring the atomic state of one atom to another in a different physical location. However, since the process of transmission destroys the original atom, multiple copies of the atom are not being created. That said, Star Trek style teleportation may not even require complete transmission of the quantum state. Charles Bennett, of IBM Research, believes that in principle, human teleportation would be possible by scanning the bio-molecular structure. He states that the "teleported person would end up slightly different, but not in a biologically important way." However, we are still clearly quite a ways away from even attempting such a feat to be truly concerned about the ramifications yet -- we are made up of approximately 1028 atoms, so the technology to scan and reproduce at such a scale is not even remotely possible yet. So, while theoretically possible, scientists are pessimistic about teleportation's realistic feasibility. For now, it looks like the only teleportation we'll be seeing is on television -- but then again, never underestimate the ingenuity of inventors and entrepreneurs.

Oct. 28, 1998: President Signs New Copyright Law

1998: President Bill Clinton signs the Digital Millennium Copyright Act into law. It will take awhile before its impact becomes apparent.

The new law was crafted to offer copyright protection to authors, composers, filmmakers and other content creators in the new and quickly evolving digital world, both online and off. The problem, as they saw it, was that it was just too easy to make exact replicas of their works.

The Clinton administration's Information Infrastructure Task Force released a "White Paper on Intellectual Property and the National Information Infrastructure" in 1995, recommending the enactment of "anti-circumvention" rights to make it illegal to try to undo the encryption of copyright works. Legislation based on the white paper, the National Information Infrastructure Copyright Protection Act, got nowhere in Congress for two years. One reason: Libraries, educational institutions and internet service providers argued that existing protections already endangered the public's right to access information.

Eventually, content creators prevailed on Congress to fulfill U.S. obligations under the World Intellectual Property Organization treaties of 1996.

One of the most controversial elements of the new law was its anti-circumvention provision. That made it a criminal offense to disable, tamper with or otherwise hack software designed to prevent unauthorized copying.

Violators could be fined $2,500. The American Library Association warned that the provision might lead to a "pay-per-use intellectual universe," keeping people from even copying stuff legally for their own private use.

In response to criticisms, the bill's supporters added a provision specifically reasserting the "fair use" of copyright material. Congress also removed a section that would have allowed the data contained in databases to be placed under copyright protection.

Another detail proved to have major impact: communications providers like telephone companies and internet service providers would not be responsible for inadvertently transmitting copyright works posted by users who did not actually have the right to transmit them.

The Republican-controlled Senate passed the legislation by unanimous consent Oct. 8, the same day the House (also GOP-controlled) voted 258-176 to begin impeachment proceedings against President Clinton. Leaders in the House were also angry at the high-tech lobby for selecting a former Democratic congressman as president of its trade association, the Electronic Industries Alliance. So the House took the copyright bill off its calendar for a few days, but eventually passed the measure by a voice vote Oct. 12.

Congress presented the bill to President Clinton Oct. 20, and he signed it eight days later as Public Law 105-304. He probably had quite a few things on his mind at the time.

HR person to be laid off

Got this email from a reader. What would you suggest to her?

Dear Sir

Hope you are doing great.
I have been a regular reader of your blog and find your posts quite interesting and informative.
Just felt like taking your advice on an issue bogging me since 2 months...
I am an MBA pass-out of 2008 batch, have been working in a Corporate HR role with one of the large Indian Group's company that is on the verge of winding-up and thus had to put down my papers.
As the job market is extremely bad, specially for a fresher in the field of HR....I have not been able to get a decent job since last two months and the market situation is getting worse with each day.. If you could kindly provide your valuable suggestions regarding:

1) Are there any good certifications/ short term courses for freshers to further build-up on my knowledge of HR and polish my resume?
2) Will working on a short term project/ assignment for an organization be worthwhile?
3) Should I take-up any job coming my way from a lesser known brand compromising on profile and compensation?
4) How far does a foreign language help an HR professional?

Being a novice in this field, your guidance will help me take informed and wise career decision.

Here's what I replied back.

apologies for the late reply - I was travelling on Diwali

Am sorry to hear that your division is winding up and therefore you need to look for another role.

My advice to you would be to find a HR role with any industry right now. You might have to take a salary cut or move locations, do that.

There are short term HR courses, but doing them after a full time MBA does not really make sense.

A short term project might be very interesting. But ensure that it offers adequate learning opportunity. Finding such organizations might be difficult. Talk to your MBA professors, since they might also be doing consulting for organizations, if they can use your efforts to support their own consulting assignments.

As far as foreign language matters, it would help only in certain specific cases, like you planning to emigrate into a non-English speaking country. I know a friend who moved to Hong Kong for personal reasons and couldn't find any HR roles there as they all needed some Cantonese/Mandarin skills.

warm regards,

Gautam
