Web Hosting Solutions Firm, SoftLayer, Unveils Digital Media Transcoding Service
Dallas, Texas - (The Hosting News) - September 29, 2008 - On-demand hosting services and virtual data center provider for the small to medium enterprise (SME), SoftLayer, is offering a new digital media file transcoding service.
Designed to enable customers to convert audio or video assets, the solution develops data into formats optimized for the wide range of content delivery methods currently in use.
Fom high definition to web to mobile, the new solution effectively helps extend content use and reach. The service is free to use for all customers, and fully automated and accessible through SoftLayer's proprietary customer portal.
Nathan Day, Chief Technology Officer at SoftLayer noted, ''All of our customers are dealing with delivering rich media content, whether they are publishing the content for download or just incorporating it into their end-user's online experience. This new service not only broadens their content's compatibility, it makes their content easier to deliver. And along with our other solutions, such as CDNLayer, we're offering an end-to-end set of content distribution resources to all our customers.''
SoftLayer's transcoding service features a simple drag and drop interface for uploading original media files. The files are uploaded over SoftLayer's private network - with unlimited bandwidth - to a transcoding server farm where they are then reformatted to a myriad of other formats and bit rates. Customers can configure and adjust their new files, controlling for:
- Various bandwidth sizes
- Video resolution (including standard definition and high definition)
- Inconsistent color definition
- Distribution on mobile and web formats
- Various screen sizes and aspect ratios
- MPEG-2 and MPEG-4
- MP3, AIFF, MPEG audio, and AAC
- Windows Media 9, Flash Video, and QuickTime
- iSCSI volumes for automatically replicating data to multiple SoftLayer data centers
- EVault enhancements to allow backup data to multiple SoftLayer data centers
- Snapshots for iSCSI volumes to track and store changes over time
Earlier this month, SoftLayer extended its StorageLayer service with features providing geographic replication utilizing iSCSI storage and EVault online disk backup.
As with all SoftLayer solutions, StorageLayer and these new features are fully automated and can be provisioned at-will through SoftLayer's proprietary customer portal and API.
StorageLayer is SoftLayer's redundant centralized storage array. It integrates multiple storage technologies into a unified solution to give companies of all sizes unprecedented gains in efficiency, accessibility, and reliability for data storage and backup. Today's additions include:
StorageLayer customers can utilize EVault to automate simultaneous backups of a single dedicated server to multiple sites. EVault lets administrators schedule backups on an hourly, daily, weekly, or custom schedule, and target full systems, specific directories, or even individual files. With iSCSI snapshot capabilities, StorageLayer customers can schedule point-in-time snapshots of their data volumes to provide another local backup solution. The snapshots can be accessed at any time to recover lost data or to be compared with current data. This feature complements the offsite replication capabilities available on iSCSI volumes within StorageLayer.
Headquartered in Plano, Texas, SoftLayer provides next-generation web hosting and on-demand datacenter services on a global basis from facilities located in Dallas, TX and Seattle, WA and Washington DC. Utilizing proprietary management tools coupled with the industry's first network-within-a-network topology, the company delivers unprecedented power and control to securely manage IT environments while providing unparalleled scalability.
